The citadel
Uçhisar Castle — rock fortress and panoramic roof of the village
Uçhisar Castle is not a European curtain-wall fort. It is a roughly 60-metre volcanic tuff pinnacle—often described as the tallest rock formation / highest panoramic viewpoint in the Göreme–Uçhisar core—carved over centuries into rooms, stair tunnels, cisterns and storage spaces. Local naming splits the twin cones as Ağa’nın Kalesi and Çavuş’un Kalesi.
People lived in and around the rock into the mid-20th century; later erosion and rockfall risk pushed habitation outward into restored stone mansions that now host boutique hotels. Byzantine-period refuge and monastic use are the best-supported historical frames. Treat “built by the Hittites in 1600 BC” as unverified marketing—settlement traces in the wider region are older, but that is not the same as a locked construction date for this citadel.
From the summit you scan Pigeon Valley toward Göreme, neighbouring fairy-chimney belts and, in clear air, Erciyes on the eastern horizon. The climb is short but physical: narrow steps, low passages, some closed corridors for safety. Allow time to move slowly and keep hands free.
Inside, empty chambers and carved openings show how a vertical “village” once worked. Some rooms may display interpretive fragments; treat any “museum” label as descriptive of carved interiors—not a separate national museum brand.
Keep expectations practical: many corridors are empty shells, some are blocked, and summit wind can be sharp even when the village feels warm. Sunset light is popular; arrive with enough buffer to descend before dark.

Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik) — Uçhisar to Göreme on foot
Pigeon Valley is the green corridor linking Uçhisar and Göreme. Cliffs are honeycombed with historic dovecotes: pigeon manure fertilised Cappadocian vineyards, and egg whites once supported fresco tempera. The practical hike is about 4 km one way (local boards cite ~4.095 km). Starting in Uçhisar and finishing in Göreme is usually easier because of the overall descent.
Expect narrow, uneven sections, occasional unclear forks and summer heat. Carry water, use an offline map and wear grip shoes. Many walkers finish in 1.5–2.5 hours; slower interpretive paces can stretch toward the longer board estimate. The roadside viewpoint near Uçhisar is a different product—great for a short stop, not a substitute for the trail.

Tığraz, Kur’an Castle, Karakale and Cevizli
Tığraz Castle, often called Uçhisar’s second major rock complex, sits toward the Pigeon Valley slopes as a multi-level rock-cut settlement with rooms, stores and connecting tunnels. Interiors are frequently closed to protect the fabric—plan an exterior / interpretive stop rather than a full underground-city experience.
Kur’an Castle appears in local guides as a quieter conical rock associated in folk memory with storing religious books. Keep expectations modest: it is a secondary name on the village map, not a ticketed sanctuary circuit.
Karakale (“black castle”) is largely ruined. Mid-20th-century stone removal left rubble and a more intact southern wall; surface finds have been linked to Late Roman–Byzantine horizons. Visit for atmosphere, not reconstructed battlements.
Cevizli, immediately north of the castle, is a fairy-chimney dwelling cluster turned café and boutique zone—walnut-tree shade and converted rock houses rather than a separate rural township.
