Antakya: Faith Landscape, Mosaic City, Separate District Days

This guide starts in Antakya—Hatay’s historic urban core—then fans out to Defne/Harbiye, Samandağ (Titus diversion system), Arsuz beaches, İskenderun, Belen/Bakras, Payas, Erzin/Issos ruins and Altınözü/Koz. Antakya is not Hatay Province. Titus is not in Antakya city. Charon’s relief is not in İskenderun.

Post-Quake Heritage Access: Recheck Before You Go

The February 2023 earthquakes damaged Antakya’s historic core and many monuments. Recovery is real and uneven. This table replaces stale 2023–24 “everything closed / everything open” blurbs. Tone: respectful travel planning—not disaster tourism.

How to Plan

Start with Geography: One City Hub, Many District Spokes

Sleep in Antakya for faith sites, food and the Necmi museum. Give Defne its own half-day for Harbiye. Drive to Samandağ for Titus, Beşikli rock tombs and Çevlik. Keep Arsuz for coast time. Treat Payas, Belen and Erzin as northern or isthmus spokes—not free add-ons to every Antakya morning.

Antakya

Faith + museum day

Habib-i Neccar, St Pierre access if open, Charonion walk, Necmi Asfuroğlu museum and food streets—recheck which doors are live.

Defne · Samandağ

Waterfall vs harbour engineering

Harbiye is Defne. Titus and Seleucia Pieria are Samandağ. Do not sell both as “Antakya city walks.”

Coast · North

Arsuz, Payas, Issos

Beach days and Ottoman Payas deserve their own daylight. Issos battlefield geography is uncertain—visit ruins without overclaiming the exact battle grid.

Antakya · Faith & Museums

St Pierre, Charonion, Habib-i Neccar and Two Different Museums

St Pierre Church (St. Pierre Anıt Müzesi) sits on the western slope of Mount Stauris / Habib-i Neccar Dağı on the Antakya–Reyhanlı approach. Tradition presents it as an early cave church linked to apostolic preaching; Acts 11:26 records that disciples were first called Christians in Antioch the city—not automatically “inside this cave.” Prefer “among the earliest Christian gathering places / cave churches” over absolute “first church on Earth.” UNESCO Tentative List 5613 (2011, criteria iii, vi). Pope Paul VI recognised it as a pilgrimage place (1963). Confirm 2026 ticket-desk status before promising entry.

  • Charonion (Haron / Charon relief): About a 10-minute uphill path east of St Pierre—in Antakya, not İskenderun or Kırıkhan despite mixed collage filenames. Colossal unfinished bust tradition links it to Antiochus IV Epiphanes and a plague-apotropaic commission (mid-2nd century BCE tradition).
  • Habib-i Neccar Camii: Often called among the earliest mosques in Anatolia—keep the claim qualified. Temple-under narratives are tradition, not proven tourist dogma. After heavy quake damage, restoration returned the mosque to worship on 27 December 2025.
  • Museums separated: Visit Necmi Asfuroğlu Archaeology Museum for in-situ Roman mosaics (including a very large single floor mosaic often marketed as among the world’s largest single pieces—qualify ranking language). Do not confuse it with the closed Hatay Archaeology Museum mosaic palace or with overnighting at The Museum Hotel.
  • Uzun Çarşı & old fabric: Historic bazaar, Assembly building and multi-faith houses of worship suffered severe damage. Walk only where reconstruction allows; do not invent a fully restored Old Antakya postcard.

Collage filename mixes districts — Charonion relief is an Antakya / St Pierre hillside stop, not İskenderun or Kırıkhan
Defne · Harbiye

Harbiye Waterfalls: Daphne Myth, Not Antakya City Centre

Harbiye lies in Defne district, roughly 6–8 km from Antakya centre. Cascades historically fed Antioch’s waterworks; classical Daphne was a suburban pleasure landscape. The Apollo–Daphne laurel myth is storytelling—label it as myth, not excavation proof. Visitor restaurants and paths were active again in 2026 reporting; watch footing on approach tracks.

  • Use Defne for waterfall shade and lunch; return to Antakya for overnight museums/food—or reverse if you sleep near Harbiye.
  • No thermal/medical claims for the valley water.

Samandağ · Seleucia Pieria

Titus Diversion System, Beşikli Rock Tombs and Çevlik

The Vespasianus–Titus Tunnel complex is in Samandağ (Çevlik), built to divert mountain floods away from the harbour of Seleucia Pieria—not an Antakya city attraction. UNESCO Tentative List 5903 (2014, criteria i, iv).

  • Length language: Enclosed rock-cut tunnel sections are on the order of ~120–130 m. Local tourism texts often cite a ~1,380 m corridor including open channels; the UNESCO dossier discusses a diversion system on the order of ~875 m. Do not collapse “tunnel” and “entire diversion system” into one slogan.
  • Chronology: Work is associated with Vespasian and Titus; some sources also mention Antoninus Pius—avoid a single mythical completion year.
  • Beşikli: A rock-cut tomb complex (chambered tombs with architectural detailing)—not a “natural cave adventure.”
  • Vakıflı: Türkiye’s last Armenian village on Musa Dağı approaches—visit respectfully; verify church/garden access. Hıdırbey plane-tree stories stay labelled as legend.
  • St Simeon Monastery (Aknehir, Samandağ): historically visitor-relevant; DOSİM marks closed in 2026 fee lists—recheck.

Mediterranean Coast

Arsuz, Samandağ and Northern Strands—No 2026 Blue Flag Claims

Arsuz beaches are in Arsuz district. Samandağ and Çevlik are Samandağ district. Burnaz is Erzin; Payas Cin Kule beach and Yeşilköy sit farther north. Local reporting in 2026 states Hatay currently has no TÜRÇEV Blue Flag beaches—do not recycle older “Burnaz Blue Flag” marketing. Never promise calm, safe or family-guaranteed water.

  • Arsuz / Gözcüler / Karaağaç: Popular public strands; check municipal seasonal services and water-quality bulletins on the day.
  • Samandağ / Çevlik: Long Mediterranean frontage; turtle nesting is reported seasonally—respect night restrictions if posted. Avoid “Turkey’s longest beach” without a sourced metric.
  • Burnaz, Payas, Yeşilköy: Useful northern day options—not Antakya city beaches.

Belen · Payas · Issos Corridor

Bakras Pass Castle, Sokullu Payas and Issos Uncertainty

Bakras Castle overlooks the Belen pass on the Antakya–İskenderun corridor. Multi-period fortress history includes Crusader and later phases—avoid “Crusader-only” shorthand. Taste Belen Tava as a GI dish (TÜRKPATENT 1645), not a medical tonic.

  • Payas: Expand beyond a single tower photo—visit Payas Castle, the Sokullu Mehmed Paşa Complex (mosque, medrese, hammam, caravanserai, arasta; Mimar Sinan attribution in standard references) and Cin Kulesi (harbour watchtower, late 1570s).
  • Issos / Erzin: Gözeneler ruins (often linked to Epiphaneia) show aqueduct and urban traces. Classical Issos harbour town is frequently identified with Kinet Höyük near Dörtyol; Alexander’s 333 BCE battlefield along the Pinaros remains debated (Deli Çay vs Payas and related channels). Visit ruins; do not pin the exact clash grid as proven tourism fact.
  • İskenderun: Port-city kordon and logistics hub—not the Charonion hillside.

Altınözü

Koz (Kürşat) Castle and Olive Country

Koz Castle (also encountered as Kürşat in some Turkish texts) crowns a ridge in Altınözü. Crusader-era fortress use in the Antioch principality landscape is the usual frame; state naming variants without inventing a single founding slogan. Olive-grove scenery is real—avoid unsourced “largest olive” superlatives.

UNESCO Creative City · GI Table

Hatay Food: Creative City of Gastronomy, Not World Heritage

Hatay joined UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network as a City of Gastronomy in 2017. That is not a World Heritage inscription. Build meals around künefe, tepsi and kağıt kebabs, kaytaz, sürk, humus, zahter salad and biberli ekmek—then verify which kitchens are open on your date.

  • Antakya Künefesi — TÜRKPATENT 101; also EU geographical indication.
  • Antakya Sürkü (Çökeleği) — 330.
  • Belen Tava — 1645.
  • Hatay Kaytaz Böreği — Turkish GI + EU IGP (2025).
  • Hatay Tepsi Kebabı — 1804 (late-2025 registration reporting).

Known addresses often cited by travellers (not rankings): Luwi Antakya; Avlu in Harbiye; Humusçu Nedim; Sultan Sofrası for künefe; Sveyka on the İskenderun shore. Confirm reopening and hours—no star scores, no health claims.

Stay & Arrival

Hotels and Hatay Airport (HTY) in 2026

  • Antakya: The Museum Hotel Antakya reopened after structural checks (September 2024 reporting). Pair with Necmi museum visits. Historic boutique names such as Savon have faced major restoration timelines—verify live inventory before booking nostalgia addresses.
  • Arsuz / İskenderun: Seaside and harbour hotels suit coast or port logistics days. No thermal “cure” hotel blurbs in this guide.
  • Hatay Airport (HTY): DHMİ operations restarted using a 2,720 m auxiliary runway after quake damage. Main 3,000 m runway resurfacing, terminal reinforcement and apron works were publicly targeted for completion through 2026. Recheck schedules; do not assume Istanbul Airport is your Hatay gateway.
  • Borders: Cilvegözü (Reyhanlı) and Yayladağı gates serve Syria crossings—administrative/trade reality, not a sightseeing product.

FAQ

Antakya & Hatay Travel FAQ

Is Antakya the same as Hatay Province?

No. Antakya is the historic urban hub. Defne, Samandağ, Arsuz, İskenderun, Belen, Payas, Erzin and Altınözü are separate district days.

Is the Titus Tunnel in Antakya?

No. The Vespasianus–Titus diversion system is at Samandağ / Çevlik (Seleucia Pieria). Keep Antakya filenames in media paths, but plan the site as Samandağ.

How long is the Titus Tunnel?

Enclosed tunnel sections are roughly 120–130 m. Broader diversion-system lengths appear as ~875 m (UNESCO dossier framing) or ~1,380 m in local corridor texts—do not treat those as one enclosed tunnel.

Is Titus on UNESCO’s Tentative List?

Yes—Vespasianus Titus Tunnel, dossier 5903 (2014). It is not an inscribed World Heritage property.

Is Beşikli a natural cave?

No. It is a rock-cut tomb complex near the Titus corridor.

Where is the Charon / Haron relief?

On the Antakya hillside about a 10-minute walk from St Pierre—not in İskenderun or Kırıkhan despite some collage filenames.

Is St Pierre the first church in the world?

It is widely presented as an early cave church and apostolic gathering place. Prefer qualified wording. Acts 11:26 refers to the city of Antioch, not automatically the cave interior.

Is St Pierre a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

No. It is on Türkiye’s UNESCO Tentative List (5613, 2011).

Is St Pierre open in 2026?

DOSİM fee lists mark St Pierre Anıt Müzesi closed while some detail pages still show hours. Recheck official desks before travel.

Is Habib-i Neccar the first mosque in Anatolia?

Tradition often calls it among the earliest. Keep that claim qualified, and treat temple-under stories as tradition.

Did Habib-i Neccar reopen?

Yes—restored and reopened for worship on 27 December 2025 after quake destruction.

Are Hatay Archaeology Museum and Necmi Asfuroğlu the same?

No. The provincial Hatay Archaeology Museum is separate from Necmi Asfuroğlu Archaeology Museum and from The Museum Hotel.

Is Hatay Archaeology Museum open?

DOSİM lists it closed. Officials have discussed staged reopening toward late 2026—verify before promising mosaics there.

Can I visit mosaics at Necmi Asfuroğlu?

Yes—the Necmi museum is the current open mosaic visit path on official fee lists (MüzeKart eligible). Confirm desk hours on the day.

Does the Museum Hotel replace the archaeology museum?

No. It is a hotel (reopened 2024) associated with the Necmi excavation/museum setting—not the closed provincial Hatay Archaeology Museum.

Is Harbiye inside Antakya municipality centre?

Harbiye is in Defne district, a short drive from Antakya—plan it as a Defne stop.

Is the Daphne–Apollo story archaeology?

It is classical myth attached to the Daphne/Harbiye landscape. Enjoy it as legend; do not sell it as excavated biography.

Is Burnaz a Blue Flag beach in 2026?

No. 2026 reporting states Hatay has no TÜRÇEV Blue Flag beaches. Do not use outdated Blue Flag labels.

Are Arsuz beaches always calm and family-safe?

This guide makes no calm, safe or family guarantees. Check local conditions and water-quality notices.

Is Hatay a UNESCO World Heritage gastronomy site?

No. Hatay is a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy (2017)—a Creative Cities Network title, not World Heritage.

Which Hatay foods have geographical indications?

Highlights include Antakya Künefesi (101; EU), Antakya Sürkü (330), Belen Tava (1645), Hatay Kaytaz Böreği (EU IGP 2025) and Hatay Tepsi Kebabı (1804).

What should I see in Payas besides the castle?

The Sokullu Mehmed Paşa Complex (Sinan-attributed külliye) and Cin Kulesi harbour tower complete the Ottoman ensemble.

Is Bakras only a Crusader castle?

It has multi-period use on the Belen pass. Crusader phases matter, but “Crusader-only” is too narrow.

Is the Issos battle site proven at Erzin’s ruins?

No certainty. Visit Erzin/Gözeneler ruins carefully; classical Issos and the Pinaros battlefield identification remain debated in scholarship.

Is Koz Castle the same as Kürşat Castle?

You will see both names for the Altınözü ridge fortress. Use either with the Altınözü district location.

What is Vakıflı?

Türkiye’s last Armenian village near Samandağ / Musa Dağı. Visit respectfully and confirm what is open.

Is St Simeon Monastery open?

DOSİM marks it closed in current fee lists. Recheck before adding it to a Samandağ day.

Is Uzun Çarşı fully restored?

No. Treat Old Antakya bazaar and multi-faith monuments as an active recovery landscape with uneven access.

Does Hatay Airport operate in 2026?

Yes—flights resumed on the auxiliary runway while main-runway and terminal reinforcement works continue toward 2026 completion targets. Confirm live schedules.

Should I fly into Istanbul for Antakya?

Not as the default. Prefer Hatay Airport (HTY) when flights match your dates; Istanbul is a long road add-on, not the local hub.

How many days do I need?

One day for a single spine; two for Antakya plus Defne or Samandağ; three to add coast or Payas; four to five to include Belen/Altınözü/optional Issos without overload.

Are Hatay thermal hotels medically proven?

This guide makes no thermal or medical health claims.

Does Cab Istanbul partner hotels or museums in Hatay?

No. Cab Istanbul offers independent private chauffeur and intercity transfer services only.

Can I combine Antakya with a wider Turkey trip?

Yes—see the Turkey overview for regional framing, then keep Hatay district days realistic.

Is disaster tourism appropriate here?

No. Travel respectfully, support open local businesses, and treat damaged heritage as recovery—not spectacle.
