Camlıca Hill · Üsküdar · Asian side

Camlıca Hill is a pair of neighbouring pine hills on Istanbul’s Asian side in Üsküdar—a hilltop park, not a high-rise terrace restaurant and not a single gated attraction. Büyük Çamlıca holds the higher grove, municipal social facilities, popular breakfast terraces and Büyük Çamlıca Camii (Grand Camlica Mosque). Küçük Çamlıca, across the Kısıklı saddle, holds the grove with historic köşks and the address of Çamlıca Tower. This page keeps those entities separate: free hill walking and views, soft sunrise and sunset timing, cafés including BELTUR, Mavera as a private dining option, mosque etiquette, tower tickets only via camlicakule.istanbul, and practical access. Cab Istanbul is a booked car with driver or airport transfer only—the driver is not a guide, and Cab does not sell tower tickets, mosque tours or restaurant bookings.

Tower prices and café menus change. Confirm camlicakule.istanbul, venue pages and live bus lines the day you go. Soft elevation for Büyük Çamlıca is about 262 m above sea level; do not treat every landmark as always visible.

Two hills

Büyük Çamlıca and Küçük Çamlıca are not the same stop

Maps and hotel pins often say “Camlıca” as if one pin covers everything. The higher Asian-side hill is Büyük Çamlıca; the lower neighbour is Küçük Çamlıca, roughly in the mid-220 m range in geographic sources. Between them sits the Kısıklı saddle. The mosque belongs with Büyük. The tower belongs with Küçük. Mixing those two is the most common visitor mistake.

Attraction Entrance Typical time Best time Note
Hill parks Free 1–2 h Clear late afternoon / sunset Hilltop park; public grove and viewpoints
Tower decks Paid ticket via official site ~1–1.5 h Clear weather On Küçük Çamlıca; see Camlica Tower
Grand Camlica Mosque Free for worship / visit with etiquette 30–60 min Outside prayer peaks On Büyük Çamlıca
Social facilities / cafés Pay for food Flexible Morning breakfast / evening tea Confirm hours on the day

Hill parks are free to walk. Café tables and tower decks are separate products. Treat “open day and evening” as a soft pattern for the public grove—not a locked 24/7 promise for every kitchen.

Hill overview—use it for landscape context, then separate Büyük, Küçük, mosque and tower below.

Views and walking

Panorama from a pine hill, not a skyline terrace

From Büyük Çamlıca on a clear day you can read large stretches of the Bosphorus, both shores, much of the historic peninsula and the Golden Horn, and sometimes the Princes’ Islands toward the Marmara. Haze, season and time of day change what you actually see. Soft distance talk toward the 15 July Martyrs Bridge is fine; this page does not lock a kilometre figure.

Paths through the grove suit unhurried walking and photography. Bring comfortable shoes, water and a light layer for wind at the rim. Tripods and large lenses are a different rule at the tower—covered in that section—while the free hill is simply a public park with viewpoints.

Panoramic city and Bosphorus view from Camlıca Hill
Hilltop panorama—clear late light helps; not every landmark is guaranteed every visit.

If you are building a wider Asian-side day, pair the hills with waterfront Üsküdar or a short drive toward other Asian districts using the Istanbul Asian side guide, and keep the strait itself in the Bosphorus overview.

Light

Sunrise and sunset work when the sky cooperates

Late afternoon into sunset is the classic soft window for colour over the Bosphorus. Sunrise can be quieter and cooler, with softer crowds on many weekdays. Neither is a guarantee of a clear horizon. If photography is the priority, leave buffer for traffic on the climb from Üsküdar or Altunizade, and treat the “golden hour” as weather-dependent, not a locked showtime.

Evening tea after the light fades is a common pattern at the social facilities. Confirm whether the terrace you want is still serving before you plan the whole evening around one café.

Breakfast and cafés

Hilltop breakfast, BELTUR social facilities, soft snack colour

Turkish breakfast with a view is one of the main reasons locals climb Büyük Çamlıca. Frame it as a hilltop breakfast on the grove terraces—not a high-rise brunch deck. BELTUR, the Istanbul municipality company, runs social facilities and cafés in the Çamlıca context (Büyük and Küçük references appear in municipal material). Menus and hours change; this page does not invent prices and does not call the food “affordable” without a figure.

Hilltop breakfast setting—confirm the venue’s hours and menu the morning you go.

Seasonal snack colour around the grove can include simit, gözleme, roasted corn or chestnuts depending on the day and vendor—useful atmosphere, not a locked menu list. Pay for what you order; the park walk itself stays free.

Private dining

Mavera as one hilltop option near Büyük Çamlıca

Mavera Cafe Restaurant is a current private venue at Kısıklı / Büyük Çamlıca Caddesi No:50, listed on its own site. Mention it as one hilltop dining option near Büyük Çamlıca—not as a BELTUR facility, and not with invented prices or hours. Confirm opening times on the venue’s page before you reserve a slot in your plan.

Mavera near Büyük Çamlıca—private dining; Cab does not book tables.

Cab Istanbul does not take restaurant reservations. If you want a door-to-door car for the climb and a later airport run, keep dining separate from the transfer booking.

Çamlıca Tower · Küçük Çamlıca

Observation decks on Küçük—not on Büyük

Çamlıca Tower (Camlica Tower) sits at Küçük Çamlıca Mahallesi, Çilehane Caddesi, Oyma Sokak No:1, Üsküdar. Official opening: 29 May 2021. Building height is about 369 m from the ground; the tip is about 587 m above sea level. Those two numbers are not interchangeable. Observation floors 33 and 34 are cited around 366.5 m and 371 m ASL on the official site; restaurants on floors 39 and 40 (about 393.5 and 398 m ASL) are the “360 Kule Restaurant” product—separate from the free hill.

Tower context—pair with the official ticket site; building height and tip ASL are different figures.

Buy tickets only on camlicakule.istanbul. This page does not lock a TL price. Official FAQ timing for the decks is roughly 1.5 hours. Baby strollers are allowed under the site’s rules; pets are not; tripods, large lenses and binoculars are restricted—confirm the live list before you pack. Hours change; check the site the day you go. For a dedicated tower page, see Camlica Tower.

Tower on Küçük Çamlıca—tickets via camlicakule.istanbul; not part of the free hill walk.

Broadcasting language on the operator site includes multi-radio capacity. Treat station-count marketing as an operator claim, not as a visitor FAQ fact you need for the ticket. Soft “49 floors” talk appears in secondary sources; prefer the official deck and restaurant floors above.

Büyük Çamlıca Camii

Grand Camlica Mosque on Büyük—opened 3 May 2019

Official name: Büyük Çamlıca Camii (Grand Camlica Mosque). Official opening: 3 May 2019, per İstanbul Valiliği / Presidency-era communications—not 2020, and not “opened with the tower in 2019.” The tower opened in 2021 on the other hill.

Opening-era government reporting describes six minarets (four taller at about 107.1 m, two at about 90 m). Officials have described it as Turkey’s largest mosque—use that with attribution. Capacity figures in coverage vary; prefer soft language: a large complex designed for tens of thousands, not one disputed headcount as the sole number.

Interior of Büyük Çamlıca Camii, Grand Camlica Mosque
Inside Büyük Çamlıca Camii—modest dress, shoes off in the prayer hall, quiet during prayer.

Tourists are welcome outside prayer peaks when they follow etiquette: modest dress, remove shoes in the prayer hall, keep voices low. There is no ticket invented for entry. Cab does not run mosque tours.

Grove landmarks

Historic köşks on Küçük Çamlıca—soft access only

Topkapı, Cihannüma and Sofa köşks are historically tied to the Küçük Çamlıca grove. They are grove landmarks, not a locked museum circuit on this page. Do not invent interior tours, tickets or opening hours. Check access on site or on current municipal pages if you want more than an exterior walk past them.

The free hill visit does not automatically include every building you see through the trees. Keep expectations on the panorama, the café terrace you choose, and—if booked separately—the tower decks.

Getting there

Üsküdar climb, tower bus hints, chauffeur option

Most visitors climb from Üsküdar, Altunizade / Metrobus / M5 areas, or Kadıköy with a short road finish. The tower site lists buses 129T, 34AZ, 34Z, plus Marmaray, Metro M4 and dolmuş D-36, D-61 as transit hints—still check IETT or Moovit the day you travel. European-side hotels mean a bridge or tunnel plus the Asian climb; a booked car with driver is the simplest door-to-door option.

From Option Note
Üsküdar Bus / dolmuş / taxi / chauffeur Short ride uphill; check live lines
Altunizade / Metrobus / M5 area Bus or taxi toward Kısıklı / Çamlıca Tower site lists 129T, 34AZ, 34Z
Kadıköy Metro / bus + short road climb Traffic variable
European-side hotels Bridge / tunnel + Asian climb Booked car with driver is the simple option

For arrivals the same day, pair a hotel pickup with Istanbul Airport transfer or Sabiha Gökçen airport transfer depending on the code on the ticket, then keep the Camlıca climb as a separate city ride on car with driver or VIP transfer.

Parking

Parking exists; stale TL figures do not belong here

Cars park near the hill complexes, and busy weekends fill spaces quickly. Fixed TL ranges copied from older blogs are treated as stale. This page does not invent a 2026 parking tariff. Pay what the signed lot charges on the day, or skip the parking hunt with a chauffeur drop-off and later pickup.

If mobility is a concern: the hills involve slopes and some stairs. Tower stroller rules are on the official site; the free grove is uneven ground rather than a flat indoor mall.

Practical tips

Keep the entities straight and the timing soft

  • Say Büyük for the mosque and main breakfast terraces; say Küçük for the tower address.
  • Walk the free grove first if weather is clear; buy tower tickets only if you want the paid decks.
  • Confirm café hours before you plan dinner around one terrace.
  • Dress modestly for the mosque; remove shoes in the prayer hall.
  • Tower: no pets, restricted optics gear, strollers under site rules—read camlicakule.istanbul.
  • Building height ≈ 369 m is not the same as ≈ 587 m above sea level.
  • Skip stale parking TL quotes; pay the signed lot or use a drop-off.
  • Cab is chauffeur / transfer only—not a guide and not a ticket desk.

Next step

Choose the hill you mean, then choose the ride

Keep Büyük for the free panorama, breakfast terraces and Grand Camlica Mosque, and Küçük for Camlica Tower tickets on camlicakule.istanbul. Walk the grove when the sky is clear, confirm café hours before you settle in, and treat parking TL quotes on old blogs as expired. For the climb from a European-side hotel, or a same-day link after landing, book a car with driver, VIP transfer, Istanbul Airport transfer or Sabiha Gökçen transfer as the itinerary needs—the booking is the car and chauffeur only, not a guide, not a tower ticket and not a table at the hill.
