Batman: Hasankeyf, District Heritage and Oil-Country Logistics

This guide is about Batman Province in Turkey—not a comic-book gag. Sleep in the modern oil city if you like airport convenience, then day-trip to Hasankeyf on the Tigris reservoir, Beşiri’s Syriac monastery, Kozluk’s Hazo ridge and the Sason highlands. City streets are not the same as district days.

Orientation

Batman / Elih on Film

A short visual pass over Batman and the older Elih/İluh place-name memory. Use it for atmosphere only—Hasankeyf reservoir levels, museum hours and district road status should be rechecked on your travel date.

How to Plan

Start with Geography: City Hotels, District Days

Batman city grew fast after commercial oil. It gives you BAL airport, business hotels, Batman Museum and a dense döner-and-simit food scene. The cliff town of Hasankeyf, Beşiri’s monastery, Kozluk’s Hazo ridge, Mereto above Sason and Gercüş archaeology are not walkable city-centre sights—treat them as separate day spokes.

Merkez

Oil city logistics

Use Merkez for flights, overnight stays and the provincial museum. Do not invent “Artukid mosques on every downtown corner”—Hızır Bey Mosque belongs to Kozluk, not the city core.

Hasankeyf day

Reservoir-era planning

Expect a new settlement, museum complex and relocated monuments after Ilısu. Old postcard views of a riverside bazaar town are historical—label them as such.

Outside the province

Malabadi & Botan

Malabadi Bridge sits on the Diyarbakır–Batman border (Silvan / Kozluk). Botan Valley National Park is a Siirt park—not a Batman headline attraction.

Hasankeyf District · Tigris

Hasankeyf After Ilısu: Flood, Relocations, What You Can Still Visit

Hasankeyf is Batman Province’s deepest heritage stop—and the place that most travel copy still describes as if nothing flooded. The Ilısu Dam and HPP (also referred to as Veysel Eroğlu Dam in some DSİ materials) raised a reservoir over the old riverside town. What travellers meet in 2026 is a layered landscape: water, cliff remains, a new settlement, a large museum and monuments moved into a New Cultural Park / Archaeopark belt.

  • Do not market Hasankeyf as an official UNESCO World Heritage Site or as currently listed on Türkiye’s UNESCO Tentative List in the World Heritage Centre database. Local campaigns talk about future listing—that is not the same as current status.
  • Avoid the unverified slogan of continuous “12,000-year habitation.” Museum and excavation narratives document deep prehistoric horizons (including Hasankeyf Höyük materials); that is archaeology of deep time, not a tourist proof of unbroken urban life.
  • Hasankeyf Museum (muze.gov.tr baseline): roughly 08:30–17:00, ticket desk earlier close (~16:30), typically open daily; MüzeKart for eligible Turkish citizens. Confirm the day you go.
  • Castle and cliff approaches: parts remain above water; access and safety fencing change—follow on-site rules.

Relocated monuments

New Cultural Park / Archaeopark

Major moves (2017–2020 band) include Zeynel Bey Tomb (Akkoyunlu; moved 2017), Artukid Bath, Middle Gate (Orta Kapı), Imam Abdullah Zawiya, Kızlar Mosque, Süleyman Han Mosque complex and Er-Rızk Mosque. Er-Rızk was built in 1409 under Ayyubid rule—not Artukid patronage. Confirm which park sectors are open when you arrive; landscaping and handover phases have been gradual.

In situ remains

Bridge stubs, caves, palaces

The medieval Tigris bridge attributed to the Artukid 12th century survives mainly as foundations/piers depending on water level. Cave dwellings and palace remnants on the cliff tell a longer story than any single dynasty label. Boat or lakeside views are sometimes offered—treat operators as local services, not Cab Istanbul partners.

Cab Istanbul provides independent private chauffeur routing to Hasankeyf from Batman hotels or BAL. We do not operate the museum, dam viewpoints or boat concessions.

Museum

Batman Museum

Provincial archaeology from Palaeolithic horizons through Islamic periods—useful context before or after Hasankeyf. Hours and ticket rules change; check culture portals on the day.

Food streets

Simit, ciğer, börek

City dining is the easiest place to try Batman simidi, liver houses and Şam böreği. Skip review-score tables—taste and hygiene matter more than star screenshots.

Not downtown

Hızır Bey & Hazo

Hızır Bey Mosque and Hazo Castle are Kozluk stops. Putting them in a “city walking list” is a geography error carried from older copy.

Beşiri · Syriac heritage

Mor Kiryakus Monastery (Ayrancı)

Restored Mor Kiryakus Monastery complex in Ayrancı village, Beşiri
Mor Kiryakus / Mor Kuryakos — Beşiri, Ayrancı village

On the east slope of Kıra Dağı above Ayrancı village, Mor Kiryakus (also written Mor Kuryakos / Kyriakos) stands at the northwestern edge of the wider Tur Abdin monastic landscape. Culture Portal notes Syriac foundation traditions in the 4th–5th centuries; absence of a bell tower is often cited as a stylistic clue pointing toward an early date—treat precise year claims as tradition plus scholarship, not a tourist plaque with a single birth year.

  • Provincial and AA reporting describe multi-stage restoration completed and a tourism opening in 2025. Reconfirm opening hours before a weekday visit—some travellers still report closed doors outside staffed windows.
  • Approach via Beşiri then the asphalt road to Ayrancı; the Kıra ridge alternative is steeper and less friendly for ordinary cars.
  • This is a living religious heritage site, not a theme park—dress respectfully and keep voices low.
Kozluk · Historic Hazo

Hazo Castle, İbrahim Bey and Hızır Bey Mosques

Kozluk’s older name is Hazo. The castle crowns the rock above the district centre; academic surveys note reuse across medieval and early modern powers, with Evliya Çelebi-era descriptions, but no single “built in year X by the Seljuks” tourist formula is safely documented.

  • İbrahim Bey Mosque — kitabe tradition places construction in 1705 by İbrahim Bey, son of Murtaza Bey of the Garzan line (Kozluk Kaymakamlığı).
  • Hızır (Hıdır) Bey Mosque — Kozluk centre; kitabe tradition associates it with Hızır Bey around the early 16th century (commonly cited 1512). It is not a Batman Merkez landmark.
  • Combine with a Malabadi excursion only if you already understand Malabadi’s Diyarbakır/Silvan filing—see nearby section below.

Sason · Highlands

Sason Valleys and Mereto: Serious Mountain, Not a City Outing

Sason highland landscape in Batman Province toward the Mereto massif
Sason highland country — plan Mereto as a mountain day, not a casual lookout stop

Sason is Batman’s highland district: strawberry farms (GI Sason Çileği), valleys and the Mereto massif. Recent reporting cites Mereto around 2,973–2,978 m. That is a long, steep hiking day—winter and late-spring snowfields are real; climbers have required rescue after poor equipment or whiteout mistakes.

  • Do not fold a Mereto summit into a Hasankeyf museum day.
  • Local hiking write-ups often start from Yürekli / Otnag Yaylası approaches—hire local knowledge, start early, carry layers and water.
  • Strawberry season is a farm-tourism add-on, not a substitute for mountain safety planning.
Gercüş · Archaeology

Gercüş Necropolis and District Heritage

Gercüş holds shrine traditions (including Zeynel Abidin associations in older guides) and a major recent archaeology story: the Şeytan Deresi cremation necropolis at Bağözü / Arık Mezrası. Rescue excavations (2023–2024) reported hundreds of Neo-Assyrian-period urn burials—provincial and museum voices have described it among Anatolia’s largest known cremation cemeteries of that type.

  • Finds are destined for conservation and display contexts linked to Hasankeyf Museum—the dig field is not a polished amusement park. Ask museum/local authorities before assuming open public access.
  • GI Gercüş Mezrune (Mezrune) grape is a separate food story for the district table.

Malabadi Bridge: Diyarbakır / Silvan Border Stop

Historic Malabadi Bridge spanning Batman Creek on the Diyarbakır Silvan and Batman Kozluk border
Malabadi Bridge — UNESCO Tentative (2016) filed under Diyarbakır / Silvan; Batman Valiliği notes Kozluk border share

Malabadi is a spectacular Artukid-era stone bridge on Batman Creek, but it is not a downtown Batman attraction. UNESCO’s Tentative List entry (2016) places it in the District of Silvan, Province of Diyarbakır. Batman provincial pages note the structure also touches Kozluk district limits—still a border excursion, not a Merkez postcard stop.

  • UNESCO text highlights a large pointed main arch (about 40.86 m) among the great surviving Artukid bridges—prefer that careful wording over an unsupported “world’s widest arch” slogan.
  • Pair with Kozluk if you are already north of the city; otherwise treat as an optional Diyarbakır–Batman road stop.
  • For Diyarbakır context see the Turkish guide: Diyarbakır gezilecek yerler.
Why the city exists

From İluh Village to Raman Oil Country

MilestoneWhat reliable chronologies say
Before oilSmall settlement known as İluh (also Elih in older naming) in the Beşiri hinterland—agriculture and pastoral life, not a metropolitan centre
1940Raman-1 / Raman Dağı drilling hits oil (MTA narrative: 20 April 1940, ~1,048 m)—discovery ≠ sustained commercial field
1946–1948Raman-8 delivers commercial production; ceremonial start associated with 8 March 1948 (İnönü-era reporting)
1955–1956Batman Refinery opens as Turkey’s first modern refinery (trial then full capacity); later under Tüpraş
1957 / 1990District status (1957) then province status (1990)—oil logistics shaped the administrative climb

Raman is an industrial and security-sensitive oil landscape—not a casual hike. Viewpoint photography from public roads is not the same as entering well pads or pipeline corridors.

Table

What to Eat: GI Names vs Regional Favourites

Southeast tables share many dishes across provincial lines. Cite TÜRKPATENT names carefully and do not auto-assign Siirt specialties to Batman menus.

  • Batman Şam böreği — mahreç GI (tescil 302).
  • Batman Piçik — mahreç GI (tescil 1508); bulgur köfte with yogurt-butter.
  • Sason Çileği — menşe GI strawberry.
  • Gercüş Mezrune grape — mahreç GI.
  • Batman simidi — hard, long-keeping local simit beloved in the city; widely called “tescilli” in tourism copy, but a matching TÜRKPATENT GI record was not verified in this research pass—order it for taste, not for a false certificate claim.
  • Mumbar, içli köfte, ciğer and wood-fired döner — regional favourites; recipes cross provincial borders.
  • Perde pilavı — GI-associated with Siirt; do not list it as a Batman GI signature. You may still see it on restaurant menus.

Names without scorecards

Older guides list Ciğerci Çavuş Usta, Çömce Lokantası, Xalo Hâyran, Ali Usta, Petrol Cafe and İnanoğlu Baklava among frequent recommendations. Treat any roster as a 2026 reconfirm list—addresses and kitchens change. We publish no review scores.

1 day Hasankeyf core Hasankeyf Museum · New Cultural Park / Archaeopark monuments · cliff/castle exterior where open · return to Merkez for simit/ciğer
2 days Hasankeyf + Beşiri Day 1 as above · Day 2 Mor Kiryakus (Ayrancı) · optional Batman Museum evening
3 days Add Kozluk / Malabadi Days 1–2 · Hazo Castle + İbrahim Bey / Hızır Bey mosques · optional Malabadi border stop (label Diyarbakır/Silvan correctly)
4 days Add Sason or Gercüş Days 1–3 · either Sason valleys / Mereto foothills (not a rushed summit) or Gercüş + museum follow-up on necropolis finds · buffer for BAL flights

Do not cram Mereto summit, Gercüş dig access and Hasankeyf museum into one daylight window. Botan Valley National Park belongs on a Siirt plan, not these Batman days.
